Dr. Charles Horace Mayo was born on July 19, 1865 and died on May 26, 1939 from pneumonia at the age of 73. His father William Worral Mayo was also a Doctor and must have served as a mentor to his two sons Charles and William, because they both became Doctors themselves. Charles graduated in 1888 with his M.D. from Northwestern University and completed post graduate education at New York Polyclinic Medical School. After school, Dr. Charles H Mayo joined his father William and older brother William’s private medical practice in Minnesota. This private practice eventually became the not-for-profit Mayo Clinic in 1919. Dr. Charles Mayo is one of the seven original founders of the famous Mayo Clinic! What amazes me is the forward thinking philosophy of these founders and amazing dedication to innovation as they registered one million patients (during the lifetime of Charles).

Charles and his partners insisted on sterile conditions in the operating room which is among one of the reasons why they were so successful in their pioneering medical treatment and research. So if Dr. Charles Mayo was so focused on purity and cleanliness what did he have to say about internal cleanliness of the body and disease?

Dr Charles Mayo Distilled Water Compared to Regular Water:

Dr Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic stated:
Water hardness (inorganic minerals in solution) is the underlying cause of many, if not all, of the diseases resulting from poisons in the intestinal tract. These (hard minerals) pass from the intestinal walls and get into the lymphatic system, which delivers all of its products to the blood, which in turn, distributes to all parts of the body. This is the cause of much human disease.”

So Dr. Mayo’s opinion was that much of human disease was caused by inorganic minerals in hard water and the negative effects this has on the human body. So what is the best way to remove these inorganic, hard minerals from regular water?

Dr. Allen E. Banik in “The Choice Is Clear” explained more about inorganic minerals and mineral free distilled water when he said:

“Distilled water is water which has been turned into vapor, so that all its impurities are left behind. Then, by condensing, it is turned back to pure water. It is the only water which is pure – the only water free from all impurities. The only minerals that the body can utilize are the organic minerals. All other types of minerals are foreign substances to the body and must be eliminated. Distilled water is the only water that can be taken into the body without damage to the tissues.”

What other organizations recommend water distillation or distilled water?

  • The American Red Cross
  • FEMA
  • CDC
  • EPA
  • National Kidney Foundation
  • National Cancer Institute
  • ADA

Drinking Distilled Water Mayo Clinic – Can you drink distilled water Mayo Clinic?

So what does their website say about drinking distilled water Mayo Clinic? I searched the website for “distilled water” and this is what I found:

Dental Fluorosis

If you’re concerned about fluorosis, consider ways to minimize your baby’s exposure to fluoride. For example, you might use ready-to-feed formula, which contains little fluoride, or alternate between using fluoridated tap water and low-fluoride water — such as purified, demineralized, deionized or distilled bottled water — to prepare concentrated formula.”

Sinus Rinsing

To ensure that your water is safe for sinus rinsing or ritual cleansing, don’t use water straight from the faucet. Use boiled or distilled water instead.”

Humidifiers

“If you use a humidifier, be sure to keep it clean to prevent mineral buildup and the growth of bacteria and molds. Humidifiers that hold standing water, particularly cool-mist humidifiers, can disperse these materials into the air. Emptying the tank and drying all surfaces of the humidifier daily is one way to safely keep it clean. Also, consider refilling the tank with bottled water labeled “distilled” or “purified,” which has a lower mineral content than most tap water.”

Neti Pots

A neti pot is a container designed to rinse debris or mucus from your nasal cavity. If you choose to make your own saltwater solution, it’s important to use bottled water that has been distilled or sterilized.

So there have been no recent articles on the Mayo Clinic website about distilled water except for talking about using distilled water for baby bottles and uses of distilled water for personal sanitation. I will keep this page up-to-date with the latest news and information from the Mayo Clinic about distilled water and water distillation.
