Are you deathly afraid of scorpions? Instead of fearing the unknown, replace a bit of that fear with some knowledge about these little crawlers that call Arizona home. And before you ask – yes, these scorpions are poisonous and can pose a threat to you if you are facing a serious sting. With that in mind, check out these 10 facts about the Arizona Bark Scorpion in case you spot one wandering around your home!

1. Bark Scorpions travel in packs of 20-30 during Winter months.

Unlike other pests, Bark Scorpions travel in packs during the winter. Therefore, if you spot one crawling in your home, know that there are likely more hiding in or around your home.

2. An adult male Bark Scorpion is roughly 8cm long.

Don’t let their size fool you, these creatures may be small but are extremely dangerous. A sting is sure to send you to the hospital.

3. An adult female Bark Scorpion is roughly 7cm long.

Although the female is lesser in size, these scorpions are extremely venomous. In an adult human, their venom may last 24-72 hours. Accompanying a sting from an Arizona Bark Scorpion is numbness, tingling and vomiting.

4. The females are pregnant for 9 months.

Sound familiar? Bark scorpions, like humans, have the same birth cycle!

5. A female scorpion typically gives birth to 25-35 young at a time.

Unlike humans, female Bark Scorpions can give birth to over 20 offspring. The females are fascinating, but knowing that they birth so many baby scorpions at once can be a major problem if their birthing place is inside your home.

6. Baby scorpions remain with their mother for up to 3 weeks.

After the female gives birth, the babies are glued to their mother’s backs until they’re able to fend for themselves on their own.

7. Scorpions are known to be nocturnal.

These scorpions have an impressive set of eyes capable of night vision. Having night vision allows these little crawlers to enter your home in the dead of night without you knowing they are even there.

8. Bark Scorpions can live up to 6 years.

These scorpions are not your average mosquito or beetle, which live for up to a week or month. These scorpions have an impressive lifespan of 6 years. Meaning, if you find yourself with a scorpion problem in your home, know that they are not leaving any time soon.

9. Baby scorpions are called Nymphs.

As baby Bark Scorpions grow into a full adult, their anatomy remains relatively the same.

10. Bark Scorpions only need an opening of 1/16th of an inch to get into your home.

With their small frame, Bark Scorpions can easily penetrate your home, potentially putting your family in harm’s way.
