Patricia Delzell M.D. explains the benefits of Light Therapy for Musculoskeletal Pain

01/23/2022, Cleveland, OH // PRODIGY: Feature Story //

Dr. Delzell specializes in integrative treatments for chronic musculoskeletal pains. She is a strong proponent of the use of light therapy along with traditional medicine. In recent years light therapy has been used to treat conditions that range from minor skin ailments to chronic pains and even to promote faster healing post-surgery or in case of sports injuries. When opting for light therapy, the spectrum and color of the light used during treatment determines its wavelength and, therefore, its ability to penetrate the body tissues.

Light therapy works by reaching the part of the cell called mitochondria. Once the mitochondria absorb the light, it then uses this energy to generate more healing energy. The light facilitates the production of Nitrous Oxide, an important chemical to promote blood flow and healing mediators in the human cell tissues. Light therapy leverages the two significant impacts of energy flow to promote healing in the strained tissues and help the cells repair themselves.

Light therapy can be administered in several ways. It may include light pads, lamps, or saunas for a general body healing procedure. In medical settings, blue light with a smaller wavelength is used to treat superficial and skin-related issues, as it cannot penetrate deep into the body. The red light is used to treat cellular abrasions that run deeper than the skin, and the infrared or IR light is used to treat deep soft tissue damage or injuries. The red or infrared light spectrum is more beneficial for chronic pain patients, where deeper penetration is required. For deeper tissue treatments, focused infrared light lasers are administered in the presence of a doctor or a nurse.

Light therapy has proven beneficial for easing pain associated with many chronic diseases. Arthritis patients and professional players can also benefit from light therapy as it helps in reducing muscle tightness and soreness.

"I envision a collaborative care model for the patients who are referred to me to guide and maintain a state of inner balance moving away from pain, illness, disease and focusing on the wellness of the mind, body, and soul." Dr. Patricia Delzell.

She added, “Light therapy can do a great deal of good while being highly cost-effective. Most patients report feeling better after just a couple of sessions. Over time, light treatment can help many people get off pain medication. Since it is only light, unlike pain medication, there are no adverse effects associated with using light to treat pain. The therapy can be delivered in many ways via blankets, lamps, light pads, lasers, and saunas. The infrared to red light spectrum is beneficial for most patients.
