UNIONDALE, NY / ACCESS Newswire / April 6, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who honors Allegra Chatterjee Gang for her expertise in the nonprofit sector. She is the founder and president of the Chatterjee Family Foundation, which focuses on assisting young people across the globe. She is an expert at communications, networking, international development, fundraising and grant writing. Ms. Gang has had a long career in media and public affairs, and her experience includes working on television documentaries, in public relations and on political campaigns.

About Ms. Gang
Ms. Gang comes from a diverse background, with an Indian father and an American mother, and has in-laws from Cameroon, West Africa. Her interests have always had an international perspective, which has drawn her to the various roles she's held throughout her career.
"My philosophy is to hold tightly onto something that I believe in and to follow through on solutions as efficiently as possible. I think there are a lot of times when you face hurdles, roadblocks, obstacles or just have some ideas that fail. You have to be willing to go the extra mile, to regroup and try all over again. It's about staying the course. Doing a little bit every day is the thing that counts ultimately," Ms. Gang explains.
One formative experience for Ms. Gang was her first job at the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Upon college graduation, she saw a small announcement at the New York University career center that explained about an opportunity for recent graduates to serve as news desk assistants for a six-month stint at the PBS Newshour with Jim Lehrer.
"I thought, 'I love Jim Lehrer!'" Ms. Gang says. She had watched the PBS Newshour with her parents as a child and had always admired the fearlessness of Charlayne Hunter-Gault and Judy Woodruff. "I said, ‘I have to do this!' And they picked me. It was fantastic training. They threw you in the deep end," she says.
A team of eight was mentored and taught how to conduct news research, monitor the wires and properly archive information materials. "They taught you how to prepare news anchors to discuss any topic with anyone they were interviewing," she says. "You had to run around in the control room, bring down tape, help the editors, make sure lunches were ordered with precision and do whatever else was needed. It was fun. It was fast-paced."
From that experience, Ms. Gang learned many skills that would help her in her future endeavors in the nonprofit sector.
Assisting Young People Globally
Ms. Gang's current focus is developing and growing the Chatterjee Family Foundation. She coordinates across various continents to address multiple critical issues faced by young people. The primary focus of the foundation is to help young people access educational opportunities, proper healthcare, leadership training and skills necessary to preserve their cultural heritage and natural resources within their countries.
"Currently, we're mainly focusing on health and youth, especially girls' empowerment and related topics. We're including some environmental sustainability efforts as well," she says.
An example of Ms. Gang's recent work involves the Kijana Global Innovation School in Western Kenya, which lasted three-and-a-half weeks. The students had participated in an environmental learning field trip, and it was necessary to interview them to demonstrate that the grant used for the trip had benefited the students in a meaningful way. Ms. Gang worked with the president of the school to create open-ended questions, which would allow the students to freely express themselves, and conducted interviews with a range of 42 students.
This project introduced Ms. Gang to a school board member who runs a medical clinic for HIV widows and orphans. Joseph Obiero, Director of HOWIC in Kisumu, Kenya, needed a grant writer, so Ms. Gang assisted him. She has continued to work with his organization and has organized fundraisers for it. Ms. Gang is helping raise funds to build a new permanent clinic to replace its leased space.
"I definitely enjoy my life. I've had my share of troubles, but being around bright young people and keeping busy with them seems to motivate me more, and I just love it. One has to make a concerted effort to laugh about the things we cannot control and channel negativity elsewhere. I'm not going to waste time being miserable," Ms. Gang says.
