City of Hope Appoints Angelique Richard, Ph.D., R.N., as Chief Operating Officer

Effective June 10, Dr. Richard will foster connectivity, alignment and innovation in operations at City of Hope National Medical Center, City of Hope Los Angeles, City of Hope Orange County and City of Hope’s Southern California clinical network

City of Hope®, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, today announced that effective June 10, Angelique L. Richard, Ph.D., R.N., will be chief operating officer of City of Hope National Medical Center, City of Hope Los Angeles, City of Hope Orange County and City of Hope’s Southern California clinical network.

“Dr. Richard has extensive experience in health care operations and nursing leadership, and this expertise will be immensely useful as she takes on her new role in a growing cancer care and research system,” said Marcel van den Brink, M.D., Ph.D., chief physician executive and president of City of Hope Los Angeles and City of Hope National Medical Center. “Importantly, Dr. Richard is well known for the mentorship and sponsorship she provides to lift staff into health care leadership positions. We look forward to the strong, engaged rapport Dr. Richard will cultivate to bolster our mission-driven work to conquer cancer for people everywhere.”

Dr. Richard will foster connectivity, alignment and innovation in operations across City of Hope’s Southern California cancer centers and clinical network. She is nationally recognized for her ability to develop and implement strategies to promote excellence in quality and safety, improve patient experience, enhance employee engagement, improve care delivery and drive growth. She will collaborate with City of Hope leadership, faculty and staff so that City of Hope can continue to deliver excellent patient care and superior outcomes.

A nationally recognized leader in nursing, Dr. Richard served on the nurse executive advisory council of The Joint Commission, the accrediting and certification body for more than 22,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. She was also on health care improvement company Vizient’s advisory board for a network of chief nursing officers.

Throughout her career, Dr. Richard’s focus and many contributions to health care have been to improve quality and patient safety, advance nursing practice, support education and research, and improve health care equity and access for underserved and underrepresented people. With her leadership, organizations have been able to achieve top rankings nationally in quality, safety, patient care and nursing.

Dr. Richard joins City of Hope from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she held many leadership positions for seven years. Most recently, she was senior vice president of hospital operations at Rush University Medical Center and system chief nursing officer at Rush University System for Health. Prior to all this, Dr. Richard served as vice president and clinical operations/chief nurse executive at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Dr. Richard earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Rush University College of Nursing then went on to earn a doctorate in nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing.
