July 9, 2021 – Author Andrew Lawler is an award-winning American journalist who has been published in National Geographic, the New York Times, Smithsonian, the Washington Post, and more than a dozen other magazines. A contributing writer for Science and Archaeology, he has spent the past two decades roving across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Americas, and Southeast Asia, writing a book about the Roanoke colonies, and articles about ancient civilizations, lost cities, cultural heritage, and more.
Lawler also is author of three books, most recently Under Jerusalem: The Buried History of the World’s Most Contested City, to be published by Doubleday in November 2021. Publisher’s Weekly named it one of the top 10 history releases for the fall season.
Andrew Lawler’s book about the Lost Colony of Roanoke, The Secret Token: Myth, Obsession, and the Search for the Lost Colony of Roanoke explored America’s oldest mystery and became a 2018 national bestseller (“surprisingly fresh and powerful” said the Washington Post). His first book, Why Did the Chicken Cross the World?: The Epic Saga of the Bird that Powers Civilization, earned widespread acclaim (“a story not just large in scope but surprising in its details” noted the Wall Street Journal).
With his knack for combining travel adventure and careful research with lively writing, Lawler has earned a cult following among those fascinated by history’s mysteries. His articles have been included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing series, and he has twice won the prestigious Gene S. Stuart Award from the Society for American Archaeology. In November, he will set out on a national tour to speak about Under Jerusalem.
