Authors of "What's Worrying Darwin?" to Hold Book Signing at ALA Annual Conference

San Diego, CA - June 24, 2024 - Bridgett McGowen-Hawkins and her son Parker Hawkins, co-authors of the children's book "What's Worrying Darwin?" will be appearing for a book signing on Sunday, June 30, from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM at the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference and Exposition. The event will take place at the Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA) booth. During this session, 30 signed copies of their book will be given away.

Intentionally released during Autism Awareness Month in April 2024, "What's Worrying Darwin?" celebrates our shared humanity and the importance of understanding and accepting differences. This 42-page full-color book, published by Big Pencil Books, a division of Press 49, is a vital addition to elementary school and library collections, supporting the call for greater diversity in children's literature, as emphasized by the American Library Association, The Children’s Book Council, and Scholastic.

In the story, nine-year-old Darwin finds himself frustrated and confused by his classmate Bethany, who seems different from the others. With the guidance of his mom, Darwin embarks on a journey of empathy and self-discovery. The book not only tells a compelling story but also offers a treasure trove of resources, including:

- What Everyone Needs to Know About Autism

- How to Engage with Someone Who’s on the Autism Spectrum

- Where to Learn More

- Family, Classroom, and Book Club Discussion Questions

"What's Worrying Darwin?" is more than just a story; it is an educational tool that promotes diversity and inclusion. Bridgett McGowen-Hawkins states, "Our goal is to foster understanding and acceptance among young readers, helping them to see that our differences do not make us peculiar or strange; they make us unique and simply who we are."

The American Library Association, The Children’s Book Council, and Scholastic have all highlighted the urgent need for more diverse books in children's literature. "What's Worrying Darwin?" meets this need by providing a narrative that not only entertains but also educates and inspires.

Join Bridgett and Parker Hawkins at the IBPA booth for the chance to meet the authors, receive a signed copy of the book, and learn more about this important work. For more information about "What's Worrying Darwin?" and to purchase copies, visit www.press49.com/catalog/p/darwin
