Coushatta Louisiana, Okhish Mound Farm has deep roots in the Industrial Hemp industry. Okhish Mound Farm and Founder Brian Bolyer are at the forefront of industrial hemp seed viability research working directly with breeders from Australia, Canada & USA. Over the last year, Okhish Mound has teamed up with Louisiana State University Shreveport (LSUS) and presents at its continuing education course “Careers in Cannabis”, University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) and hemp farmers across the South East. Okhish Mound is committed to bringing proven Hemp Fiber genetics to flourish in our southern climate, helping row crop farmers supply the ever growing hemp textile industry.
Brian, a current Advisory Board Member and Seed Coordinator of the National Hemp Growers Cooperative based in Jackson MS, is being considered for a chair nomination by Louisiana Commissioner of Agricultural, Mike Strain DVM to help spearhead the Louisiana Industrial Hemp Promotion and Research Program formed in the last legislative session. As Seed Coordinator for the Mississippi based NHGC, he directly works with Universities across the South, identifying future hemp applications in building materials and insulations, bioplastics, cottonized hemp fiber and educating farmers that will supply these efforts.
Through local ties with Southern Genes, LLC, a cannabis cultivation company, Bolyer aims to bring his expertise gained working with industrial cannabis to Lumberton MS. “Being located near I-59 and a short drive to the coast was what attracted us to Lumberton. We intend to expand our industrial hemp operations to include farmers from Ocean Springs up to Laurel, and Lumberton put us right in the middle!”
With Medical Marijuana now available in Mississippi Brian knew it was time to act and consulted with Templar Investment Group of Lumberton MS to help acquire a local facility for cultivation, research, and educational outreach.
“We are interested in extracting the full potential of the cannabis plant; whether it’s bio-plastic or fuels, medicine, sustainable building materials, or educating farmers on the potentials of industrial hemp, South Mississippi is where we want to be”, says Bolyer.
Bolyer has stated that “we are on our second round of raising capital in preparation of building out a facility in Lumberton”
When asked if he has received any support from the city of Lumberton he states, “calls have been made to City Hall and we believe there is mutually shared interest in a successful startup.”
