After dropping for more than a decade, rates of prostate cancer - the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Canadian men - are rising again. Data from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation shows that prostate cancer rates have increased 0.8% each year from 2014 to 2022. Additionally, advanced-stage diagnoses among men aged 50 and older have also risen during this period.
Research shows diet plays a significant role in prostate cancer outcomes, according to statistics from the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Unfortunately, nutrition often suffers for both patients and caregivers during treatment periods. During the PROSTAID Calgary meeting, attendees will learn about meal programs from Meals on Wheels Calgary designed for both short-term and long-term needs. Christine Hentschel, the agency's Manager of Strategic Initiatives and Partnerships, will explain how those recovering from illness or surgery, or providing care for them, can gain access to quality, nutritious, and affordable meals.
Malnutrition is known to delay healing and increase risk for chronic disease, according to the NIH. However, 40% to 80% of cancer patients experience reduced food intake due to treatment side effects, including nausea, taste changes, fatigue, and appetite loss. Some doctors encourage patients to eat whatever they like during treatment to avoid extreme weight loss and fatigue during treatment - a strategy that's not without drawbacks.
Many turn to fast food at times like these - foods that promote inflammation and oxidative stress that fuel cancer growth. Diets high in saturated fats, red meats, and processed meats increase disease risk and progression, according to the NIH. Conversely, studies show plant-based diets can reduce progression risk by 47%.
The meeting will be held at the CKE Community Centre at 7:30 p.m. on March 18. Attendance is free and open to all individuals affected by prostate cancer. While no registration is needed to attend in person, those interested in joining virtually should submit an RSVP to receive a Zoom link.
