OntarioSpousalSupport.com has launched a free Net Family Property Calculator that walks Ontario residents through the equalization process — showing both spouses what they own, what they owe, and what the equalization payment should be before they retain a lawyer.

-- OntarioSpousalSupport.com, a free online resource for Ontario residents navigating separation and divorce, has released a dedicated Net Family Property Calculator designed to help separating married spouses understand property equalization before they sit down with a lawyer.
The calculator is available at no cost at https://ontariospousalsupport.com/asset-division.html.
Net family property equalization is the process Ontario courts use to divide assets when a marriage ends. It is not a 50/50 split of everything owned — a common misconception. Instead, each spouse calculates the value of property accumulated during the marriage, and the spouse who accumulated more pays the other half the difference. The mechanics are specific: the value of property owned at the date of separation, minus debts, minus the value of property each spouse brought into the marriage on the date of marriage, produces each spouse's net family property figure. The spouse with the higher number pays an equalization payment equal to half the gap.
The new calculator walks users through this process step by step, capturing both spouses' assets and liabilities as of the date of separation, the values each spouse held at the date of marriage, and applicable exclusions. Ontario law excludes certain property from the net family property calculation entirely — gifts and inheritances received during the marriage, personal injury damages, and life insurance proceeds, provided they have not been mixed with other marital assets. The calculator flags these exclusions and explains how they affect the final equalization figure.
One of the most commonly misunderstood rules in Ontario family law is the matrimonial home treatment. Unlike all other assets, the matrimonial home carries no date-of-marriage deduction — even if one spouse owned it outright before the wedding. That pre-marital equity cannot be subtracted from the equalization calculation. The calculator applies this rule automatically and surfaces the financial impact clearly.
"Property equalization is one of the most financially significant calculations in any Ontario divorce, and most people don't understand how it works until they're already in the middle of it," says Tim Robertson, CEO of Big City Networks. "Our calculator gives people a clear picture of where they stand before they spend money on professional valuations and legal fees."
The tool joins the Spousal Support Calculator and Child Support Calculator already available on the site, completing a full suite of free financial planning tools for separating Ontario residents. Together, the three calculators address both the income-based and asset-based sides of divorce: ongoing support obligations and the one-time division of accumulated property.
As with all calculators on the site, the Net Family Property Calculator produces estimates only and does not constitute legal advice. Property division in complex situations — those involving businesses, pension assets, real estate held in corporations, or significant pre-marital wealth — typically requires professional valuation and legal advice before any agreement is signed.
