Upwork (UPWK) Stock Trades Up, Here Is Why

UPWK Cover Image

What Happened?

Shares of online work marketplace Upwork (NASDAQ: UPWK) jumped 3.4% in the afternoon session after the company announced the launch of Lifted, a new subsidiary targeting the enterprise workforce. The new wholly owned subsidiary, named Lifted, is designed to combine talent sourcing, contracting, and workforce management for all types of contingent, or temporary, work. This strategic launch represents a significant push into the enterprise staffing sector, a potentially lucrative market for the talent platform. The move builds on Upwork's recent acquisitions of Bubty, a freelance management system, and Ascen, an employer-of-record provider, signaling a clear strategy to offer more comprehensive workforce solutions to large businesses.

After the initial pop the shares cooled down to $14.71, up 3.5% from previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Upwork’s shares are very volatile and have had 20 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 8 days ago when the stock gained 3.2% on the news that markets continued to rally as the latest inflation data reinforced expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut as soon as September. The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for July showed inflation holding steady, reinforcing market expectations that the Federal Reserve could begin cutting interest rates as soon as September. Lower interest rates generally stimulate the economy by making borrowing cheaper for consumers and businesses. This can lead to increased consumer spending and e-commerce activity, which directly benefits online retail and marketplace companies. The positive economic outlook fueled a broad-based rally, pushing the S&P 500 and Nasdaq to new record highs and lifting most growth-oriented technology stocks.

Upwork is down 10.4% since the beginning of the year, and at $14.71 per share, it is trading 16% below its 52-week high of $17.50 from May 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Upwork’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $997.29.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, it should be obvious by now that generative AI is going to have a huge impact on how large corporations do business. While Nvidia and AMD are trading close to all-time highs, we prefer a lesser-known (but still profitable) semiconductor stock benefiting from the rise of AI.
