Our construction skills trades training site will be a game-changer for Detroit’s youth, offering them opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and community impact.

Through community-led fundraising, %COMPANY% plans to renovate an existing space to facilitate a construction skills trades training site that empowers Detroit’s at-risk youth to make positive changes to our physical community.

In partnership with local high schools and the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Center, we aim to provide a pathway to success for young people who may have faced barriers in traditional educational settings.

We aim to give these individuals a fresh start at becoming skilled and productive community members. Our in-depth training programs will equip students with valuable certifications and experience in construction trades, setting them on a path toward stable employment and economic independence.

Our commitment to community engagement means that the skills learned in our training center will be immediately put into action through meaningful projects aimed at revitalizing Detroit’s neighborhoods.

Together, we can empower Detroit’s youth to build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.

Read on to learn more about our plan and how to become a part of putting it into action.

What Is the Purpose of a Local Construction Skills Training Site?

The purpose of a local construction skills training site is to provide individuals with the necessary knowledge, skills, and certifications to pursue successful careers in the construction industry.

It’s a physical space offering easy-to-access programs that cover a wide range of construction trades, including carpentry, drywalling, roofing, and other building essentials. By providing hands-on training, classroom instruction, and real-world experience, time spent at this site will prepare youths for entry-level positions in construction and further advancement within the industry.

In addition to fostering deeper connections with local young people, we aim to address workforce shortages in the construction sector by equipping participants with the skills needed to meet the demands of Detroit’s job market.

Another advantage of having a local construction skills training site is that we prioritize community engagement, working on projects that elevate our area and contribute to neighborhood revitalization.

The plan is to create a safe training space that plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with valuable skills, fostering economic opportunities, and supporting the growth and development of our communities.

Providing Opportunities for At-Risk Youth

We will provide valuable opportunities for at-risk youth by offering a skills training program, complete with paid work experience. It’s more important than ever to encourage our young community members to get involved in giving back to help elevate our neighborhoods through the interior and exterior remodeling of residential properties. However, equipping these underserved youths with the skills they’ll need to succeed as adults is equally essential.

We want to build a skills training site that does both.

Our Site Renovation Plans

We’ve secured a building to serve as a hub for our community engagement project, but like many other buildings in our community, it’s seen better days. Through community-led fundraising events, we’d like to revitalize this space and transform it into a safe, secure atmosphere where our students can do their best learning.

Here are just some of the things this space will need to meet these requirements:

  • Structural repairs
  • Electrical upgrades
  • Plumbing renovations
  • Weatherproofing and insulation
  • Exterior restoration

About Our Proposed Training Program

Once our building renovation is complete, this space will house our construction skills training program. Students will receive trade accreditation and become independent contractors upon completing our construction skill trade training program.

We plan to develop training and study materials for each student registered in our program. We’d also like to provide each participant with a company work uniform or T-shirt and arrange transportation to move students from our training site to job sites to complete a workday.

Construction Skills Training

Here are some examples of the different skills training options that will be available through our program:

  • Carpentry
  • Framing
  • Drywalling
  • Electrical
  • Roofing
  • Flooring
  • Siding
  • Plumbing
  • Mechanical
  • …and more!

Construction Safety Training

Maintaining a safe construction site is essential for the timely competition of any project and the well-being of workers and anyone else on-site during a build. We plan to offer weekly safety classes covering everything from proper handling of hand and power tools to safely and effectively using construction equipment and heavy machinery.

Why Our Partnership With Local Institutions Is Essential

Certifying students to work in construction trades is just one part of our larger plan. Once our youth-based workforce is accredited, we plan to put those independent contractors to work restoring and renovating abandoned and run-down houses in our local neighborhoods.

We’ll work with the following organizations to identify disadvantaged individuals living in properties that may benefit from home remodeling performed by our student workforce:

  • Providence Baptist Church
  • Detroit Rescue Mission
  • The Housing Choice Voucher Program
  • Department of Veteran’s Affairs

A newly updated home gives a renewed sense of pride in home ownership and can be a major catalyst for the growth and prosperity that will elevate Detroit’s population. That’s why our work is so essential and will require community involvement from many different areas.

Community Engagement Initiatives

Your participation is what will help bring our goals to fruition. We plan to host a number of community engagement initiatives to help drum up the funding required to translate our training center ideas into a reality we can all be proud to have participated in.

Fundraising for this project may include:

  • Silent auctions
  • Corporate sponsorships
  • Events
  • Online crowdfunding
  • Direct appeals
  • Grant funding
  • Community partnerships

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to help shape the community you call home, this is your chance to attach your name to a legacy project that will positively impact our city and its inhabitants for many years to come.

Why Empowering Detroit’s Youth Is Good for Everyone

Detroit has a dwindling population spread across a large area. With a declining tax base, a small stock of aging housing options, and a reduced fire services budget, many challenges currently stand in the way of the neighborhood revitalization that would restore abandoned and unsafe neighborhoods and create new job opportunities.

Our construction skills training center is a solution that covers all the bases by serving at-risk youth with the skills and training required to impact community restoration, one home at a time. We plan to make it possible for a person who’s never had the opportunity to live in their own home to do so. We’ll do this by purchasing abandoned, run-down, and foreclosed households, teaching our students how to remodel them, and then offering them to those who qualify.

The way forward is by giving our youth the tools required to make positive changes within themselves and their communities. We offer them the training to learn the skills they’ll use to reshape the world around them. How’s that for a win-win situation?

How to Get Involved

Do you want to know more about how to get involved in bringing %COMPANY%’s construction skills training center to life? Are you the right candidate to help us extend a safe and accessible job training site to inner-city kids?

If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that anything is possible with the spirit of the community behind us.
