Norilsk Nickel and Russian Academy of Sciences Launch Largest Arctic Expedition

A group of scientists from Russia's Academy of Sciences has embarked on a comprehensive study of the ecosystem and the environment of the Arctic in an expedition to the Taymyr Peninsula at the invitation of Norilsk Nickel, Russian mining giant. As part of this expedition, the group is tasked with developing recommendations on the best environmentally friendly practices and solutions for industrial companies operating in the Arctic.

MOSCOW - July 27, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

An unprecedented in scale expedition to the Taymyr Peninsula in the Russian Far North propels scientists on a comprehensive study of the environment and ecosystem in the region on the invitation from the Russian mining giant Nornickel. The main objectives of the study include developing environmental solutions for industrial companies operating in the Arctic.

“Today, we clearly understand that without an in-depth study of and reliable scientific knowledge about the Arctic, there can be no development plans for the region,” said Nornickel CEO Vladimir Potanin at the start of this research. “Before we proceed any further, it is imperative to understand what geological and biochemical processes were the result of both natural and anthropogenic changes in this region. Based on the results of the Great Norilsk expedition, Nornickel will revise its existing approach to industrial ecology. As the region’s leading industrial developer, Nornickel is fully aware of its responsibilities.”

The group is comprised of 26 scientists representing Russia’s leading research institutes, universities, and applied science organizations. All of these scientists are experts in various fields: from geology to botany, petrochemistry to economic forecasting, have solid field experience and were recommended by the heads of their respective 14 academic and scientific institutions. A possibility of establishing a permanent scientific embarkment in the field is being explored as well.

The objective behind the expedition transcends the need to find viable, sustainable environmental solutions with the climate changes taken into account, as the group’s findings are slated to form the basis of new principles of industrial management in Russia’s Arctic. The scientists will consider both the experience of other countries engaged in resource extraction in polar latitudes and domestic developments.
