About 75% of Americans have some type of creative hobby.

Woodworking is something that humans around the world have been doing for centuries. Are you looking for a new hobby?

If you have an interest in the art of woodworking, it’s important to learn more about what it is, where it came from, and how you can begin.

Keep reading to find out more about this useful skill.

What Is Woodworking?

Woodworking is the art of cutting, joining, and shaping wood to create something useful or decorative. It is an art that has been perfected for centuries but is still popular today among hobbyists.

With woodworking, you will continuously come across new challenges that will help your skills stay sharp. It is a great hobby for people that want to do something solitary with their hands and create a tangible object they can use or view.

Usually, woodworkers will follow a plan to create the project they have imagined in their head using the wood on their table.

Not only is woodworking a great way to use both the logical and creative parts of your brain, but it also is something anyone can do. With the right know-how and tools, you too can be a woodworker!

Is a Woodworker the Same as a Carpenter?

Woodworking is more for people that want to build smaller objects, like furniture, sculptures, or wall art. Carpenters are people that build structures, like a home or a building.

With that being said, some people still use the terms interchangeably because both of these titles deal with a person that works with wood.

A Brief History of Woodworking

It’s no secret that our ancestors used the things around them, including wood, to create functional and decorative objects. Woodworking has been featured in many parts of the history of our society, including religion, recreation, survival, and agriculture.

With woodworking skills, humans could do things they needed more effectively. As a result, they were able to survive easier and develop our society more.

Many ancient civilizations used wood to create furniture and other items.

As humans continued to change and grow, so did the woodworking skill. More knowledge was gained and the skills, techniques, and ideas evolved in tandem.

Types of Woodworking

There are a few main categories of objects that people may create while woodworking. It’s important to be aware of them so that as you get started, you’ll understand which types you’re most interested in.

The main types of woodworking include:

  • Item construction (furniture, cabinetry, etc.)
  • Wood mosaics
  • Wood carving
  • Wood burning
  • Scroll sawing
  • Woodturning

It’s also important to note that not all types of woodworking will fall into these categories. Because it is such a broad art, there are many woodworking projects that can’t be categorized so easily.

One of the great things about woodworking is that you get to make the object you’re creating entirely your own.
