May 5, 2021 – ‘Watching the ‘8:46′ minutes footage in which a police officer’s knee was on George Floyd’s neck was heart breaking. The shocking inhumanity and the death of African American George Floyd was overwhelming,’ said the artist.

De Bruce reflected on Nina Simone’s quote, “You can’t help it. An artist’s duty as far as I am concerned is to reflect the times.”

After attending a ‘Black Lives Matters’ peaceful protest, “I was feeling the blues, “The poem title materialised like a dream.” George Floyd Blues.” said De Bruce. He did some research, and commenced writing the poem, but finished emotionally reflective.

Alone in his art studio during the lockdown, still feeling the blues, the urge to paint a tribute surfaced. He researched Picasso’s blue period works. The artist thoughtfully mixed sincere acrylic blue colours to paint the George Floyd tribute portrait. The iconic words, “I can’t breathe,” seeps through the translucent shades of blue on the canvas. Gestural brush strokes convey the emotionality, layered within Riccardo De Bruce’s contemporary painting, a sincere tribute to George Floyd.

Contemporary artist Riccardo De Bruce, after experiencing an epiphany. Started a series of new number and word paintings in 2017. Relating to historic and contemporary deaths and genocides. ‘2669’ was the title of his first critical work in the series painted acrylic on large format canvas.
