As of the end of October, Ningde’s lithium battery new energy industry saw an output value of 110 billion yuan, following the stainless steel new materials industry as the city’s second 100 billion yuan industrial cluster.
Over the past years, driven by leading enterprises Ningde CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd.) and ATL (Amperex Technology Limited), Ningde has introduced more than 80 industrial chain projects from, e.g., Zhuogao, Shanshan and XTC (Xiamen Tungsten Co., Ltd.), covering key materials such as positive electrodes, negative electrodes, separators, electrolytes, etc. and supporting projects such as battery components, machinery, packaging materials, etc. The total installed capacity of batteries and the total capacity of batteries under construction exceed 295 GWh. Ningde has become the world’s largest polymer lithium-ion battery production base.
CATL’s shipment volume of power batteries and energy storage batteries ranked No. 1 in the world for four consecutive years and became the first “unicorn” officially listed on A-shares in Fujian in 2018. It has a market value of more than 1 trillion yuan, and is among the third batch of single-product champion manufacturing enterprises. The shipment volume of consumer batteries, main products of new energy technology, ranked first in the world for nine consecutive years. CATL is one of the largest suppliers of lithium-ion batteries in the world, a global leader in technology, capacity and sales volume among other professional lithium battery manufacturers. CATL’s batteries are widely used in smartphones, laptops, drones and other applications.
Technology leadership is the core source of power that drives the industry to grow bigger and stronger. At present, Ningde has built the National Engineering Research Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Technology, the only one in China and the largest one in Asia; and is building a new innovation laboratory 21C Lab, one of the four innovation laboratories in Fujian Province, which has a research and development team engaged in materials research and development, product development, engineering design, testing and verification, manufacturing and other areas. The technologies involved cover the entire industry chain — material → process → equipment → cell → module → battery pack → battery management system (BMS) → battery recycling and dismantling → material recycling. CATL has successfully applied for over 6,000 patents, and unveiled the world’s first sodium ion battery.
Lithium battery new energy industry chain projects are also present in Gutian County, Pingnan County, Fuan City, Fuding City, Xiapu County, Shouning County and other surrounding areas. An industrial pattern that is supportive, involves mountain and sea resources, and promotes cascade utilization, has taken shape, and an industrial cluster with regional characteristics of Ningde has been formed.
During the “14th Five-Year Plan” period, Ningde will focus on promoting the capacity expansion of CATL Fuding Base, CATL-FAW Power Battery Co., Ltd., and construction of CATL Sanduao New Area Base, accelerate the expansion and extension of consumer batteries and power batteries to comprehensive energy storage, scene applications, and key production equipment manufacturing such as PV power storage, charging and discharging. By then, the city’s lithium battery production capacity will exceed 400GWh, and the output value of the whole industrial chain will exceed 400 billion yuan. As a result, Ningde will become a “global core area for new energy and new materials industries” and the world’s lithium battery capital.
