Minnesota Based New Charter School Focuses on Oracy and Cultural Diversity by Creating a Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education for all students.Cross River K-5 charter school has empowered students who self-advocate, aspire to academic and economic success and actively contribute to their community and beyond.

St. Paul Park, MN, USA – Cross River Charter School has been established with a mission to provide a unique and successful elementary school experience in a talk-rich environment that gives voice to student self-expression and prepares them for upper grade success. The school curriculum has been well designed to provide sound foundations for the development of oracy skills with strengths in supporting persuasive talk and promote self-advocacy. Cross River wants to create an equitable system of support for all students to help them achieve their outcomes.

“I know first-hand how important it is to have a solid foundation of learning to be prepared for the unknown future,” says Anne Vang-Lo, Executive Director at Cross River Charter School. “I understand uncertainty. But I also know resilience and how important it is to understand and embrace the unique challenges of our lives, and how impactful those early challenges are as we build and shape our futures.”

As part of its oracy skills framework, the school focusses on developing physical skills (voice and body language), linguistic skills (vocabulary, language variety, structure, rhetorical techniques), cognitive skills (content, clarifying and summarizing, reasoning) and social & emotional skills (attentiveness, self-confidence, team-building).

Cross River has a strong literacy program for the primary grades knowing that the most important factor for student academic success is reading at grade level by 3rd grade.

Cross River teachers use oracy (speaking) practices in the classroom during lesson delivery. Teachers provide many opportunities for students to orally respond during class instruction. Oracy is part of all lessons in all subjects at all grade levels.

The school continues to refer to expertise and approaches developed outside the school to ensure that the curriculum takes account of recent research studies and development projects. The staff and teachers at the school strongly believe that creativity and innovation are going to be game-changers when it comes to building and promoting a ‘culture of talk’.

“At Cross River, we want every student to have a voice, be empowered and be part of a beautiful and culturally embraced community of parents and teachers as one,” says Anne. “Your voice matters at Cross River.”

Cross River’s educational environment is collaborative in nature for both staff and students with the highest standards and levels of success as the guiding principle for all. Their education philosophy focuses on three ultimate outcomes: student self-advocacy; goal-focused students; and students who are contributing members of society. This philosophy is realized through strong leadership, instructional practices of highly qualified teachers and the use of 21st century technology.
