How to Defend Against Violent Crimes in the United States

Written By: Sharon O’Conner

It’s no secret that crimes are on the rise everywhere, not just in Los Angeles County. There has been a slew of home invasions; follow-home robberies; and even kidnapping. It’s as though we’re living in a third-world country. There is a rise in mentally unstable people.

“People need to be aware of their surroundings”, said Shihan Taku Nakasaka, a branch chief officer of Kyokushin Karate of Los Angeles. Kyokushin Karate is one of the most aggressive full-contact karate styles. It was founded by Masutatsu Oyama who was born in 1923.

Shihan Nakasaka, during the hate crimes against Asians, started a private self-defense program. He teaches his students how to disarm an attacker with a knife, and how to disarm a perpetrator with a gun. His classes are usually sold out. There’s high demand these days and the demand is increasing.

This is not a one-time class. That’s not enough. It takes practice. People have to learn to be swift. The more we practice, the better we will get.

Disarming a knife/gun requires an element of surprise. “It has to be done with speed”, said Shihan Nakasaka. He teaches the students what to do in specific situations. I found his classes extremely helpful. I’m a 26-year-old woman of small stature. I feel more confident after taking his courses. Honestly, I was afraid to go out prior to taking his course. My life was dictated by criminals. I didn’t want to live like this.
