DailyDoctor and Stanford Stroke Center Announce Virtual Blood Pressure Monitoring Study

By: PRLog

Reducing the risk of strokes with proactive hypertension mitigation

SAN JOSE, Calif. - July 7, 2022 - PRLog -- DailyDoctor, a digital healthcare company pioneering remote care for patients with chronic conditions, today announced the initiation of a virtual blood pressure monitoring study with the Stanford Stroke Center. The research study will explore the efficacy of remote monitoring to help patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) lower and maintain blood pressure. Over a six-month period, the study will examine the percentage of patients who achieve target blood pressure with daily blood pressure monitoring and management, from the comfort of home.

According to the American Heart Association, each year, approximately 800,000 Americans have a stroke, with approximately 200,000 strokes occurring in patients who have had a prior stroke. Blood pressure control is one of the most medically effective methods for preventing repeat strokes, yet optimal control is difficult to achieve in today's standard of care because of a lack of patient care in between doctor's visits.

To date, there has not been an efficient way to clinically monitor and manage blood pressure. Traditionally, patients are asked to record their home blood pressures in a handwritten journal and bring those diaries to their in-person doctor visits where doctors determine changes in medications. The burden of blood pressure management has fallen on primary care physicians who are already in short supply with long waitlists for appointments. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) estimates that by 2033, the shortage of physicians in the U.S. may reach up to nearly 140,000, with a projected shortage of neurologists of 19% by 2025. The DailyDoctor remote monitoring platform allows virtual medical teams to more efficiently achieve and maintain blood pressure control in high-risk patients while improving patient access to healthcare.

How it Works

The Stanford Stroke Center is referring patients with a history of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) to DailyDoctor for blood pressure monitoring and management. Referred patients meet virtually with DailyDoctor physicians and take their blood pressure daily at home, using a remote blood pressure monitoring kit. Each day, the DailyDoctor platform uses clinically adopted guidelines to analyze the patients' data and alerts physicians of blood pressure trends. DailyDoctor physicians adjust medications until a patient's blood pressure reaches and stays in the goal range based on their medical judgment.

"Stroke is one of the top causes of death and disability in America, and in many cases is preventable with more proactive care, including improved blood pressure control,"  says Vijay Rajasekhar, MD, MBA, Founder/CEO at DailyDoctor. "While adoption of virtual care has accelerated due to the pandemic, we have only scratched the surface of how it can help patients lead more proactive and healthier lives. This study has the potential to not only reduce participants' risk of stroke but also demonstrate the benefits of a new model of remote care."

"As stroke specialists, we are focused on acutely treating strokes when patients arrive in the hospital to preserve as much brain function as possible, then help them with their recovery, and prevent future strokes through reducing risk factors," says principal investigator, Maarten Lansberg MD Ph.D., Stroke and vascular neurologist and Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurological Sciences at Stanford University Medical Center.  Long-term blood pressure control is a key component of stroke prevention.  Remote monitoring capabilities, such as those provided through DailyDoctor, may help stroke patients get their blood pressure under control and improve long-term prognosis.

Previously, in 2021, researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine utilized the DailyDoctor platform in a research study for patients diagnosed with COVID-19. DailyDoctor has also worked with Kaweah Health Medical Group to monitor frontline healthcare workers for COVID-19 and patients with high-risk chronic lung disease.
