Free Monthly Podcast Invites Research Scientists To Dispel Misconceptions About The History Of Cyprus

Relying on the authority of scientific journals and their publishers, the podcast's episodes discuss the language, culture, war, economy, religion, politics, and social history of Cyprus right from 10,000BCE to the 20th century, challenging common narratives with academic findings

July 11, 2022 - Andreas Charalambous is hosting a free monthly podcast centered around the rich and exciting history of Cyprus. Titled The History of Cyprus, the new podcast invites experts (archaeologists, linguists, anthropologists, and social & political historians) to dispel misconceptions about the eastern Mediterranean island, by sharing and analyzing the discoveries of their research journals in each episode.

According to the host and founder, Andreas Charalambous, while typical tourist books attempt to capture the colorful history of the third-largest and third-most populous island in the Mediterranean, they, however, are mostly written for promotional purposes and fail to adequately portray the facts. On the other hand, scientific research journals - backed by verifiable data, which contain accurate accounts of the nation's history are often inaccessible, incredibly expensive, or impossible to find.

To bridge the gap between the desire to learn about Cyprus and the difficulty in accessing reliable information, The History of Cyprus Podcast invites experts to discuss the language, culture, war, economy, religion, politics, and social history of Cyprus in each episode, relying on their academic findings to address common narratives and misconceptions. Delivered in English and accessible to everyone for free, the podcast traverses the evolution of civilization in Cyrus, from 10,000BCE to the 20th century.

While the first few episodes focused quite a bit on Cyprus in antiquity, Charalambous has revealed that there are some more great conversations coming up with Dr. Benjamin Arbel and Dr. Andrekos Varnava, who will discuss the Venetian and British Cyprus respectively. The podcast aims to present listeners with a rich, comprehensive analysis of the country's journey so far, going far back to the eras of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman empires.

Though new episodes are released every month, there are also "bumper" episodes that tease the next release. These episodes are dramatic readings of primary sources as they pertain to the next episode -- performed by voice actors with musical accompaniment to dramatize the source that most would never get to hear or read. Diverse and compelling topics already covered and available to listeners include:

- Magic in Ancient Cyprus with Dr. Drew Wilburn.

- Medicine in Antiquity with Professor Emeritus, Demetrios Michaelides.

- The Linguistic History of Cyprus with Dr. Pippa Steele.

- Cyprus' earliest occupants with Professor Emeritus, Alan Simmons.

- Cyprus between Assyrian and Persian empires with Christian Koerner.

Andreas Charalambous, a Canadian of Cypriot descent, currently teaches history in Toronto, Canada, where he resides with his wife and two children.  For more information on how to follow the podcast episodes, please click on the following link: https://www.podbean.com/site/podcatcher/index/blog/7EymKKfL1Hyj, or reach out to Andreas via the contact info below.
