Most foreign countries require travelers planning to drive or rent a vehicle to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) that shows they hold a valid driver’s license in their home country. The International Drivers Association simplifies the process and can issue an IDP in as little as two hours.
An IDP translates one’s driver’s license into the language of the country they plan to visit. It is regulated by the United Nations and designed to be easy for both English and non-English speakers to read and understand. However, an IDP is not an official form of identification and cannot be used as a replacement for a valid driver’s license. A digital IDP booklet will be delivered by email in about two hours and includes the validity period, the list of countries that accept IDPs, a list of vehicles the person can drive, and driver’s license information. The International Drivers Association IDP is valid for up to three years.
A printed IDP will be delivered in two to 30 working days, depending on the delivery method selected. This includes the 16-page IDP booklet and a complimentary ID card. Some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, do not accept the digital IDP, so travelers to those countries should plan accordingly.
