In the pursuit of peak performance in baseball, most people struggle with their self-esteem, which snowballs and affects other performances. Steve Springer shares that hitting is as much a mental activity as it is physical, if not more. In his experience, baseball coaching should also touch on the mental because training the mental side of hitting takes off the pressure and builds up players.
Steve Springer is a former Major League Ballplayer, former Blue Jays Scout, and Mental Coach, current Oakland A’s scout, mentor, and founder of Quality At-Bats. According to Springer, “baseball is the biggest self-esteem-destroying sport in the world; this is why most young players quit before their athletic-ability has time to develop.” With Quality At-Bats, Springer has created training modules that teach the psychology of hitting.
In his training, Springer also focuses on teaching parents how to build their kids up from an early age. “Too many players quit before they finish developing physically because of the pressure put on them by the ones who love them most. Us, parents. Parents, you are your kid’s number one coach because you live with them,” shares Springer.
His 35+ years journey in baseball have taught him patience and resilience. He didn’t get to start in high school, got cut in college, and still made it to the big leagues. Realizing that baseball is a mental game shifted the scales for Springer. This is why he has embraced travel baseball to help baseball players, young and old, realize the importance of training their mental side as much as they focus on the physical.
“The mission of Quality At-Bats is to help players show up to the plate with 100% confidence because 90% of hitting is how you feel when walking up to the plate.”
Quality At-Bats also helps people escape the batting-average trap that demotivates most players—helping players redefine their definition of success, from just getting hits to hitting the ball hard with a goal to help your team win!
