Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure Launches a New Campaign To Raise Awareness About Fetal Alcohol Spectrum DisorderIndiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure works to prevent prenatal exposure to alcohol, drug and other substances known to harm fetal development by education, advocating and supporting professionals, policymakers, families, and individuals throughout Indiana.

Indianapolis, Indiana - December 9, 2022 - Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure has launched a new campaign to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, or FASD. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a term that encompasses a wide range of symptoms caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Fetal alcohol syndrome is one of these disorders, but others fall under this "umbrella" diagnosis.

Diagnosing the disorder is complex; many people are diagnosed later in life, and some may never receive a diagnosis. Indiana Alliance hopes to raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder to help people Connect The Dots to FASD by knowing what symptoms to look for and how to talk to their healthcare provider about the disorder.

During a recent interview, Jaclyn Franks, Executive Director of Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure, made these comments, "FASD is often misdiagnosed as individual disorders rather than a spectrum of related conditions caused by prenatal substance exposure. Our new campaign focuses on educating the public about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, so we can promote earlier diagnosis and connect those living with FASD to necessary support. Early identification is key in helping people with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder live healthy and productive lives."

About Indiana Alliance:

Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure works to prevent prenatal exposure to alcohol, drug, and other substances known to harm fetal development by educating, advocating, and supporting professionals, policymakers, families, and individuals throughout Indiana.

Their Vision: A state where all individuals are born free of exposure to alcohol, drugs, and other substances known to harm fetal development.

They believe that…

  • FASD is the leading known preventable cause of developmental disabilities and birth defects, and a leading known cause of learning disabilities.
  • FASD annual births are greater than the new cases of Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis, spina bifida, and sudden infant death syndrome.
  • FASD prevention is at least ten-times more cost effective than the $1.4 million lifetime cost to treat one person with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
  • FASD can affect anyone regardless of ethnicity, income, or educational level.
  • FASD is completely preventable.
  • FASD children and adults can succeed with access to services and appropriate intervention.
  • FASD birth mothers deserve therapeutic intervention and treatment.
  • FASD families and caregivers deserve a voice among researchers and policymakers.

IAPSE's campaign aims to provide education and resources to those affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. By becoming aware of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, individuals, families, professionals, and policymakers can become better informed and get the help they need.

With the help of this campaign, Indiana Alliance hopes to give individuals and families a better chance at diagnosis and access to proper support.
