Sunil Sharma, the Gordan Ramsay-trained chef behind some of New York and San Francisco’s most famous restaurants, has branched out on his own for a new restaurant, St. Thomas Social. Located in the luxury district of Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant aims to bring “vibe dining” to the Island of St. Thomas with an infectious energy, extraordinary harbor views, and unparallel cuisine.
Sharma, along with Mac McClafferty — a private equity magnate — opened the restaurant on February 20th with an investment from The Toscani Group of New York. The partners have enjoyed a packed house ever since.
“Seeing this project come to fruition is a tremendous milestone for me and our team,” Sharma said in a statement. “What I’ve learned as a chef is that people want to feel cared for. What we have created as a team is a stunning space that feels both exciting and inviting. We value connecting with our guests and aim to provide a culinary experience that feels indulgent and unique yet approachable, whether it’s a cocktail at the bar or a celebratory dinner.”
Sharma, who was born in India and raised in Dubai before moving to New York City at age sixteen, credits his diverse upbringing with the uniqueness of flavors he uses in his signature dishes that have left his guests in awe.
“We’ve literally had some of the most renowned food critics in the world, who have written for well-respected publications for decades, coming up to us after they’ve eaten their meals saying they’ve never had food so delicious, or that they’ve never tasted such balance or complexity in certain dishes. Chef Sunil is a superstar, and he’s finally getting the recognition he deserves for being a true culinary genius,” stated McClafferty.
There are currently no Michelin-starred restaurants in the Caribbean, but McClafferty who was a registered lobbyist for many years in Ohio and Washington D.C., says that he’s leaning heavily on the restaurant guide to expand its rating service to include Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
“We have some of the best culture and cuisine in the world, and whether it be Marmalade in Puerto Rico or St. Thomas Social in the Virgin Islands, we believe the Caribbean region has gems worthy of three Michelin stars.”
