On May 11th, 2023. Cathy Olson of Hollywood & Mind brought out iconic activists from different spaces in pop culture together to speak on mental health advocacy in Hollywood. Stars who have influenced how mental health advocacy looks in the entertainment industry spoke at the summit on what led them to this work. Leaders in this movement like Demi Lovato spoke on the topic as well as Meredith O’Connor who spoke right after. O’Connor addressed how the global impact and movement that her anti-bullying advocacy created was unexpected when she first began to use her fame for the cause. Daniel McCartney, agent at UTA and the moderator for the “Power of Song” panel addressed the this in a question to Meredith O’Connor to which she replied:
“Right after ‘Celebrity’ came out, no one really knew how an anti-bullying song would be received; To me, it’s really important to continue to demonstrate that you can be authentic, you can help people, and sell out shows and find success at the same time”.
Meredith then began to share how launching the anti-bullying movement after her first hit single broke out faced some resistance at first before it became so influential. Other panelists and speakers including Em Beihold, Master P, Valerie June, Charlamagne Tha God and others who discussed the significance of mental health themes in their work. The day included a fireside chat with Demi Lovato and Cathy Olson, a performance by Grammy® Nominated Artist Valorie June, hit recording artist Em Beihold, and Meredith O'Connor addressing her hiatus from the music industry for University to study mental health. Meredith O'Connor closed with an announcement about relaunching her award winning school program on May 30th with the NYC Department of Education and it’s anticipated global rollout this Fall.
