Fuse: The “Precision Protection Sentinel” of Medium and High Voltage Distribution Networks

Fuses are indispensable short-circuit protection devices in medium- and high-voltage distribution networks (110 kV-500 kV). Their core function is to quickly interrupt the fault current when overloads or short circuits occur, preventing the fault from escalating and protecting core equipment such as transformers and circuit breakers. Like a "precision protection sentinel" for the distribution network, fuses are widely used in urban and rural distribution networks, new energy power plants, industrial parks, and other scenarios. Their working principle is based on the thermal effect of current. The core components are the fusible element (fuse wire) and the fuse tube. The fusible element is made of a low-melting-point alloy material. Under normal operation, the heat generated by the current passing through the fusible element is insufficient to melt it, and the equipment remains conductive. When a short circuit or severe overload occurs, the current increases sharply, the fusible element heats up rapidly and melts, instantly interrupting the fault circuit. The entire process takes only milliseconds, effectively curbing the spread of the fault and reducing equipment damage and the scope of power outages.

Medium- and high-voltage outdoor fuse cutouts possess three core advantages. First, they offer precise and reliable protection, providing graded protection based on the magnitude of line fault current to prevent malfunctions and adapt to the complex operating conditions of medium- and high-voltage distribution networks. Second, they exhibit outstanding weather resistance, employing a sealed fuse tube design to withstand harsh outdoor environments such as wind, rain, salt spray, and extreme temperatures, operating stably within a range of -30℃ to +70℃ without frequent maintenance. Third, they feature a simple structure, controllable cost, and convenient installation; replacing the fuse element requires no specialized equipment, significantly reducing operation and maintenance costs and time.

Currently, with the upgrading of medium- and high-voltage distribution networks and the accelerated integration of new energy sources, the market demand for fuses continues to increase, especially in distributed photovoltaic and wind power projects, where their rapid protection characteristics effectively mitigate equipment failure risks. Chinese companies have achieved self-sufficiency in core technologies, and their products comply with IEC international standards, adapting to the needs of distribution networks at different voltage levels. In the future, fuses will be upgraded towards miniaturization and intelligence, incorporating condition monitoring functions to achieve early fault warnings and working in conjunction with equipment such as outdoor vacuum circuit breakers to further improve the safe and stable operation of medium- and high-voltage distribution networks.
