In March of 2020, as part of a local safety recognition program, Terminix branches in Houston began donating bicycles to children through A Soldier’s Child Foundation (ASC), an organization that provides toys and birthday gifts to children of U.S. military service members who have lost a parent in the line of duty. To date, Terminix branches across Texas have donated 31 bicycles to 14 families in the program—and the program is still going strong. Every branch in the area that goes incident-free for a month gets to donate a bicycle to a child that month.

Keith Davies, Terminix outside sales professional from the North Houston branch, recently had the opportunity to deliver a bicycle to a child who had lost a parent. “It was very special, very rewarding,” said Davies. “At the end of the day, fallen soldiers are our heroes. When they give their lives while defending our freedoms, sometimes there is a young child left behind. It’s a way to help these kids and show them that we are grateful for their parent’s sacrifice. It’s a fantastic program.”

The partnership began during a field leadership summit in January of 2020, when Terminix introduced its branch, service and sales managers to the organization. Each of the more than 1,200 attendees was asked to bring a children’s toy to the meeting to donate to the organization.

Jim Odom, a Terminix sales manager in the Houston area, was so moved by his teammates’ response and the mission of the organization he sought out Daryl JW Mackin, founder and executive director of A Soldier’s Child Foundation. The relationship between Terminix and the foundation took root and, as other branches followed suit, the safety program is thriving for Terminix teammates in communities across Texas; particularly in the greater Houston area and Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

“When I joined Terminix, I discovered that we have quite a few veterans on our team,” said Patrick Page, branch manager for Terminix in Fort Worth, Texas. “My father was in the military for 20 years, so this was something that immediately connected all of us. This program is such a great way to give back to our community. We are humbled to have the opportunity to work safely, while helping others.”

“Terminix has been a great partner for the children we serve in the Texas area,” said Mackin, founder and executive director of ASC. “It was a blessing to meet with the corporate executives and connect with the company managers last year. I am thrilled that some of the managers kept in touch and initiated ideas to do more for our ASC kids. Because of them, Terminix continued in giving, by sharing some joy with our Dallas and Houston area families. Any gesture of love and honor to these special American families aids in the healing of their hurting hearts. They deserve to know we care, and what they have been through matters to us.”

Terminix is dedicated to hiring and supporting veterans as well. The company is a partner of HirePurpose, an organization that focuses on helping transitioning service members, veterans, and military spouses find careers. In fact, in 2020, Terminix was also nominated for the Secretary of Defense Freedom Award, a prestigious honor distinguishing places of employment that go above and beyond to support active members of a reserve force and their families.
