Capella University Expands Direct Assessment Format to Doctoral Business Students

Institution continues to expand its growing FlexPath portfolio as students demand more flexible learning options

Capella University, an online higher education institution serving working adults, is expanding its signature FlexPath competency-based, direct assessment learning format to include a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). The DBA in FlexPath format will round out a full portfolio of business degrees, including a bachelor’s and master’s in business administration. This new pathway comes one year after the launch of Capella’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) in the FlexPath format.

“The DBA in the FlexPath format is a testament to Capella’s dedication to making higher education fit the schedules of our busy working students in an accessible and affordable way, and we are thrilled to be able to offer it to our students,” said Dr. Todd Wilson, Dean, School of Business, Technology, and Health Care Administration. “Having a DBA that they can complete on their own time may help our learners as they pursue professional growth.”

The DBA program in the FlexPath format will be scholar-practitioner focused and technology-driven. Students will develop a professional brand to assist them with their economic, career, and personal goals. Graduates complete a capstone project, demonstrating their high-level of expertise, confidence, and strategic thinking to drive progress and change within a specific business or industry.

Through the self-paced FlexPath format, which has more than 10,000 graduates, students can personalize their learning by customizing a schedule to best fit their busy lives. The faculty-designed program, created in consultation with industry leaders and employers, ensures that business and education professionals gain relevant skills needed to stand out in the workplace.

“Today’s students need formats like FlexPath to balance advancing their education alongside their work, community and family responsibilities,” said Dr. Richard Senese, President of Capella University. “Our FlexPath format addresses many traditional education barriers, by helping make a degree affordable and accessible, and in this case, opens opportunities to an advanced degree for business students.”

Unlike traditional formats, with FlexPath students pay a flat-rate tuition every 12-week session rather than pay per credit (books and other fees are extra). In the front end of the program, students may be enrolled in up to two courses simultaneously, which gives students control over the cost of their degree. In addition to FlexPath’s flat-rate billing session tuition, Capella is also launching a new “Capella Tuition Cap” for DBA programs. The DBA program in the FlexPath format will cap tuition at a maximum amount for eligible students.

Capella University is approved to offer the DBA in the FlexPath format by the Higher Learning Commission.
