University of Phoenix Joins Arizona Heroes to Hometowns in Supporting Turkeys to Troops

University volunteers participate to package and distribute meals ahead of Thanksgiving holiday

University of Phoenix joined non-profit Arizona Heroes to Hometowns in supporting the annual Turkeys to Troops meal donation drive on Sunday, November 20, in Mesa, Arizona. The annual event focuses on supporting veterans’ and their families across the Phoenix region with a complete Thanksgiving meal. In its third year of participating, University of Phoenix donated 50 meals and volunteers from the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs and Veterans’ Employee Resource Group (ERG) joined in helping package and distribute meals.

“Holidays can be a challenging time for veterans and their families, and University of Phoenix is honored to work closely with Arizona Heroes to Hometowns on this important effort to support families,” states Eric Ryan, senior director of the Office of Military and Veteran Affairs and a veteran of the Marine Corps.

Since 2008, AZ Heroes to Hometowns has served over 20,000 Arizona military families with a Thanksgiving dinner. The event invites post 9-11 wounded/injured Troops, Gold Star families, families of deployed military service members, National Guard, Reserves, and Active Duty (E7 and under) military to pick up a food box and grocery gift card for a turkey.

The mission of AZ Heroes to Hometowns is to assist wounded troops and veterans and their families in the transition back to their community and their new normal. The non-profit also joins University of Phoenix in its annual Memorial Day flag-planting, and then collects flags to be distributed at local military cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day.

University of Phoenix serves the educational goals of veterans and military students, with specially trained staff to assist service members, veterans, and military spouses and dependents. In addition to providing career-relevant education and flexibility that fits military student and working adult schedules, student veterans’ and military students’ experience and training can be assessed to potentially earn college credits .
