The year-end gifting season often brings with it a plethora of gift giving, but a real estate agency based in central Mexico’s San Miguel de Allende—Condé Nast Traveler magazine’s #1 Small City in the World—thought deeper to come up with a more lasting commitment to the community.

The gift of education.

“Our boss always said ‘The more you learn, the more you earn,’” notes Broker Greg Gunter of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colonial Homes San Miguel, “and that’s especially true here.”

According to the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), Mexico places last at 17% for completion of higher education studies among the 36 member nations, where an average 37% of people have a tertiary qualification.

“That’s an abysmal statistic,” adds Gunter, “that we felt our firm could improve.”

Gunter and his fellow Co-Broker Alma Cecilia Rameriz ended 2025 by funding ten full-year university scholarships to the local Biblioteca Scholarship Fund, giving ten worthy students the opportunity to attend university.

A Forbes 2024 article noted that Mexico’s percentage of students enrolled in higher education (38%) still lags behind other Latin nations, including Brazil (50%) and Argentina (89%).

“And we aim to change that,” note Bill & Kathryn Graham, Co-Chairs of the Biblioteca Scholarship Fundraising Committee. “That ranking is because of a lack of financial resources, not desire” adds Graham.

“Ten families lives will be blessed,” notes Ruth Olvera, Scholarship Coordinator. “Greg and Alma’s donation rank them as the leading contributors among our institutional givers in San Miguel de Allende, we’re thrilled they have repeatedly proven to be such community supporters.”

Olvera notes the program has a high retention rate of 97%, and the majority of their scholarship recipients are the first in their family to graduate from college.

“That’s a statistic I can relate to,” notes Gunter, “since I was the same. Scholarships are how I earned my degrees and we’re thrilled to assist ten scholars in doing the same.”

As part of his Giving Pledge, Buffett recently donated $750 million worth of stock to his late wife’s organization, The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which provides scholarships to Nebraska college students.

“And my business parter and I are thrilled to follow in his footsteps,” added Gunter.
