Dedicated to Fostering Employee Well-Being and Exceeding Client Expectations, Canyon State Electric Is Recognized Throughout Phoenix as a Premiere Single-Source Electrical Solution Provider

When he founded Canyon State Electric in 1978 as a one-man electrical subcontractor, Steven Maderazzo didn’t realize how many lives he’d touch. Now led by Maderazzo’s two children as well as the company’s president, Robert Hughes, Canyon State Electric offers holistic services, from design-build projects and maintenance services to low voltage systems (including high-quality life safety systems like Notifier by Honeywell and Avigilon).

However, what really sets the firm apart is a strong commitment to customers and employees alike. “We pride ourselves on who we are, not just what we do,” says Hughes, who worked in the field as an electrician before assuming a leadership role at the firm.

While physical safety has always been a large focus in the electrical industry, Hughes notes, mental health awareness was lacking. According to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men working in construction have one of the highest suicide rates by population. In response, Canyon State Electric recently created a nationally recognized suicide prevention program, 4x5.

“We wanted to lead the charge and bring awareness to everyone,” says Hughes. “The program has saved so many lives already.”

Empowered Employees

In addition to the 4x5 program, Canyon State Electric champions a growth- and wellness-oriented culture. At the office, employees can prioritize their physical health by partaking in optional cardio, meditation, and yoga sessions. Leaders at the firm also bring lunch to field workers once a month, one of many small gestures to show how much they appreciate the steps their team takes to provide excellent customer service.

The University of Canyon State Electric is another instance of employee investment. Founded by Hughes, the state-accredited, four-year apprenticeship and training program provides 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and courses in electrical work. Every student who maintains a set GPA graduates debt-free.

This opportunity is especially meaningful to Hughes, who took a similar path after realizing college, even on a football scholarship, wasn’t for him. To make the barrier to entry more accessible, students interested in enrolling can sign up via Canyon State Electric’s website or reach out directly to the director of education, Sidney Hawkins.

Together, employee education and well-being programming help make Canyon State Electric a superior place to work, which translates to top-of-the-line electrical services for clients across a wide range of services.

“Many companies say: ‘We only do data centers or manufacturing.’ At Canyon State, electricity is electricity,” Hughes notes. “Doesn’t matter if it’s one lightbulb or a million. We can do it all.”
