Spotlight on Compassion Adult Daycare: Creating Community for Colorado’s Elderly and Disabled

On the most recent episode of Women in Motion, we had the privilege of learning from Hawa Dicko, founder of Compassion Adult Daycare in Aurora, Colorado. Hawa’s story is one of determination, compassion, and community-centered care. Originally from Ghana, Hawa drew on her background in healthcare and her values of hard work and family to create a space for elderly and developmentally delayed adults to feel supported and engaged in their community.

The Mission of Compassion Adult Daycare

Hawa founded Compassion Adult Daycare to address the gap in non-medical, daily support for seniors and individuals with developmental disabilities (IDDs). From assisting with doctor’s appointments to providing companionship, Compassion Adult Daycare offers a vital service to those who need support with daily activities. Hawa’s team also helps with medications, reminding clients to stay on schedule—a significant relief for families who might not live close to their loved ones.

Compassion Adult Daycare operates with a two-part model: an in-center daycare program open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM and a home-based care service that extends 24/7, allowing clients to remain in their own homes longer. This flexibility in care is at the core of Hawa’s mission: ensuring clients maintain a high quality of life while receiving the support they need.

Expanding Care Through Compassion and Connection

While Compassion Adult Daycare has been impactful, Hawa is driven to grow her services. She dreams of expanding her center beyond Colorado, with plans to open locations in Ohio and Arizona. She’s also addressing logistical challenges like transportation. With added funding, she aims to purchase more vehicles to help her caregivers reach clients in need across greater distances.

Recently, Hawa diversified her services by opening a medical supply business, providing essential products like wheelchairs, diapers, and shower chairs. This addition has allowed her to offer a more holistic approach to client support, expanding her reach and making critical supplies more accessible to the community.

Joining the WBEC-West Family

Hawa’s journey took an exciting turn when she joined WBEC-West, an organization dedicated to supporting women business owners. With the help of a friend who encouraged her to apply, Hawa became part of a network that felt like family. Through WBEC-West, Hawa has received invaluable guidance, educational resources, and mentorship. A notable benefit has been her involvement in Strive, a program helping her grow her tech skills—a valuable asset for any business owner.

A Message for Families and Future Clients

For families seeking compassionate care for elderly relatives or loved ones with developmental disabilities, Compassion Adult Daycare offers a unique, supportive environment where clients are treated like family. From initial meet-and-greet sessions to free trial days, Hawa and her team ensure every client and family feels comfortable and confident in their decision.
