Gluten Free Fresh Pasta Business Grows Free Vegetables In Chicagoland

By: Get News
Woman owned local business gives back to Chicago communities through philanthropy food gardening.

A new Chicagoland business, Ugly Noodle, which makes gluten free, vegan, and low fodmap fresh pasta is working to grow free vegetables within Chicago and free for local residents. Their passion for providing financial assistance for food gardens stems from the founder’s personal experiences living in a food desert on food stamps. Ugly Noodle’s mission is to serve you extremely tasty food sensitivity friendly pasta that works to end food deserts in Chicago.

A food desert is an area where people have limited physical access to affordable nutritious foods. In 2020, 1 in 8 Americans were food insecure. Food insecurity is the lack of ability to maintain your daily food needs. In 2010, the USDA reported that around 23.5 million Americans lived in food deserts.

Food deserts lack suppliers of whole foods like vegetables. Instead, the available foods in these neighborhoods are highly processed and low in nutritional value. Studies have shown food deserts and food insecurity contribute to a proliferation of health issues for people living in them and an estimated 16-year shorter life expectancy estimate for individuals who are unable to maintain their daily nutritional needs. Current studies estimate that 12 million children are experience hunger daily in America.

Your purchase at Ugly Noodle helps support the founders 501 (c)(3), Ugly Noodle Community Initiative, which solely works on urban food growing efforts with the Chicago Parks Foundation local food garden plots. They donate from each sale to build, maintain, grow and distribute produce in food insecure areas of Chicago. Distribution partners like, The Love Fridge in Chicago make this possible.
