Celebrating a Legacy

Often during the grieving process, there is a certain sense of “I wish I would have…” followed by a statement of regret. We understand this sentiment and will be there for you every step of the way as you work through those emotions. While many things help to set us apart from other funeral homes, one of them is that celebrating the legacy of your loved one is top of mind for each member of our staff.

We also want to recognize that celebrating a legacy is something we can do starting today and in the future as well.

Spend time with them

We’re going to start by shifting gears a little bit. Celebrating a legacy is something that can happen before someone passes away. Do you have an aging parent or grandparent who perhaps loves watching NASCAR? Then take them to a nearby dirt track event or buy tickets to a race at Mid Ohio. This is just one example obviously, but our point is simple: spending time with them celebrates their legacy while also building memories that will last a lifetime.

Ask them to share stories

Another way to celebrate a legacy of a loved one is to ask them to share stories from their childhood or working years. This is especially endearing between grandparents and grandkids who may have had very different life experiences. Not only is this a learning process, but it’s also a great way for a grandparent to revisit their earlier years through the eyes of their grandkids.

Share the life lessons your loved one taught you

Many times, we can look back on our experiences with our loved ones and see unintentional life lessons they taught us. As soon as you think of one, write it down in a journal or in an app on your smartphone. Then, when the time comes, share it with someone who may need it.

Donate something in their honor

Did you know that many non-profit organizations often run on little to no margin for error with their budgets? One way to celebrate a legacy is to donate money in their honor. It may not be a large sum (though it’s not unheard of for a family to set up a fund in memory of their family member). However, every little bit helps them with their operational expenses.

Volunteer in their honor

Along the lines of non-profits, did your loved one have a passion for a particular organization? Perhaps they volunteered at the local humane society. If so, you could volunteer in honor of them, spending a day serving them as a way of celebrating their legacy as a volunteer.

Social media

In an upcoming blog, we’ll be covering some ways to preserve memories. One way is via social media platforms, such as sharing memories or simply changing your profile picture on the anniversary of their passing or on their birthday.

Celebrating a legacy is an ongoing process

Our Celebration of Life Center is committed to helping you celebrate your loved one’s legacy. If you need to get in touch, you can reach us at 937-399-2811 or message us via our short contact form here.
