Sanborn, in collaboration with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) and Prince George's County, Maryland, has been recognized with a Geospatial Excellence Award from the Management Association for Private Photogrammetric Surveyors (MAPPS), the national association of private-sector geospatial firms, for its innovative approach to tree canopy analysis and management.

The award was accepted by Sanborn Chief Strategy Officer Kate Hickey on behalf of the project team, highlighting a collaborative effort that leverages advanced geospatial data to better understand, protect, and enhance tree canopy across Prince George’s County.

“The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and Prince George’s County demonstrate what’s possible when agencies have access to high-quality, actionable geospatial data,” said Kate Hickey, Chief Strategy Officer, Sanborn. “Our approach to Tree Canopy Assessment moves beyond traditional tree inventories to provide a comprehensive, top-down view of tree cover, identifying opportunities for expansion, preservation and revealing where tree cover is lacking. Our goal is to provide insights that improve communities and deliver measurable public value.”

Tree canopy coverage plays a critical role in supporting healthier neighborhoods, reducing urban heat impacts, improving air quality, managing stormwater, and strengthening long-term community resilience. Through the integration of high-resolution geospatial analysis and identification of canopy gaps and priority planting zones, the project delivers actionable information that supports informed planning and equitable investment.

MAPPS annually recognizes projects that demonstrate technical excellence, innovation, and meaningful public impact within the geospatial profession.

Founded in 1866, The Sanborn Map Company, Inc. is a leading provider of end-to-end geospatial solutions, serving federal, state, and local governments, utilities, and Fortune 500 companies.
