The Original Surfers Surpass 40 Million Instagram Views – Leading a Global Movement for Teen Ocean Activism

Kaila and Waian Turley, two American teens, lead a worldwide ocean conservation movement, setting new Instagram records

San Diego, CA - September 25, 2024 - Teen ocean activists Kaila and Waian Turley, the founders of The Original Surfers, have reached a remarkable milestone, with their Instagram account surpassing 40 million views.

This achievement highlights how The Original Surfers stand out as refreshingly different teen influencers. Instead of promoting themselves, they focus on environmental conservation and protecting the ocean. Their efforts are driving real momentum for teen ocean activism.

Founded by sisters Kaila (18) and Waian (16), The Original Surfers is dedicated to raising awareness about urgent ocean issues, including sewage contamination, plastic pollution, and the effects of climate change.

“The Original Surfers are dolphins. We grew up surfing beside dolphins here in San Diego,” explained Waian Turley.

The Turleys have captured the attention of teens worldwide, becoming some of the most inspiring teen influencers in the environmental space. Their mission is clear: to motivate young people to take action and protect the ocean and the beach.

“We started The Original Surfers because we saw how much the ocean was suffering, and we knew we had to make a difference,” said Kaila Turley. “As teens, we have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations. We want to encourage others to join us in the fight for our ocean.”

One of their major campaigns sheds light on the dangers of aging sewage systems, which leak contaminants like E. coli into the ocean. The issue hits close to home for the Turleys.

“It’s frustrating to think that the beautiful beaches in our hometown have sewage leaking into them every day,” said Waian Turley. “And it’s not just here—beaches across America and around the world are facing similar problems with aging sewage pipes.”

Waian added, “Today there is a sewage contamination sign posted at our beach. We can choose not to go in the ocean, but dolphins and other marine animals can’t.”

The Original Surfers Instagram has seen 14 posts reach over 1 million views, with their most popular post—focused on protecting La Jolla’s sea lions—garnering more than 12 million views.

“We’re the voice of sea lions, dolphins, whales, and other ocean animals,” said Waian. “They can’t speak for themselves, so we’re here to fight for them and the ocean they live in.”

With more than 40 million views on Instagram, The Original Surfers is the most popular teen led ocean activism movement today. And they continue to expand their influence.

“We want more teens to join us in protecting the ocean. We welcome teen guest posts, influencers, video editors, and collaborations,” said Waian. “If you’re looking for a cause to support, we’d love for you to join us!”
