• There are 61,700,000 results on Google for `Keto Ice cream’ recipes.

• Here are the best ones to try

After evaluating some of the best recipes for Keto Pancakes out there in the online recipe space, our team curated a list of Top Picks that are truly Ketogenic – and make easy, feel-good desserts without slowing down your weight loss rate or knocking you accidentally out of Ketosis. We cut through all the noise on the internet for you busy people, so your recipe selections are easy, Keto correct and tastes like a treat!

Our highest priority for Keto Ice Cream recipes is to achieve the richest, most decadent experience while not going overboard on total net carbs and fat.  The holy grail with these ice creams is a smooth, sweet, RICH flavor that isn’t overly tart, coconutty, or odd-textured.  But recipes that taste like real ice cream are hard to find without using up a LOT of your target fat grams for the day.  Still, it seems like most of us on Keto plans are willing to forego a few fat grams during the day if we know we get a decadent treat for dessert.

A great, homemade Keto Ice Cream is like gold!  Done correctly, you feel like you’ve cheated after eating it – even though you’re still completely on track. To source these, we didn’t just search for the recipes with the lowest total net carbs and fat.  We went for the perfect combo of flavor, texture and mouthfeel. Some of these are custard-based and need cooking and churning (with ice cream makers), but they are worth it.

Let us know which recipes you try and love, as well as your thoughts about variations, sweetener options, and more!

# 1: Low Carb Keto Ice Cream Bars

These low-carb ice cream bars have creamy vanilla ice cream inside and a chocolate coating outside.

Evolve180 Review:

Maya Krampf pays close attention to ensure the sweeteners she uses are truly Keto. This is nice, since many other recipe authors appear to recommend sweeteners that are not right for Keto dieters. Also, Maya from WholesomeYum is aware that for smoother, scoopable texture, it’s important to use specific types of sweeteners, such as Allulose / Monk Fruit blend.

  • 8 Silicone Popsicle Mold Perfect for a keto ice cream recipe as the bars release easily from these popsicle molds.

# 2: Keto Ice Cream Sandwich

These easy ice cream sandwiches are the perfect treat to enjoy on a hot summer day. You can customize yours with chocolate chip ice cream or sprinkle filled edges… it’s all up to you, how you choose to savor them.

Evolve180 Review:

• This recipe uses commercial ice cream from  Mammoth Creamery, so you don’t have to make the ice cream itself – which is the most time-consuming part of recipes like this – from scratch. Mammoth Creamery sweetens their product with Xylitol. It contains approximately 1g net carb and 25g of fat per ½ cup serving, which is great for Keto diet Maintainers. The servings are HUGE, however, so we recommend dividing this recipe into 8 servings instead of 4.

Preparation Time Sheet:

• Prep Time: 10 minutes
• Cook Time: 10 minutes
• Cooling Time: 2 hours
• Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes

Equipments Needed:

  • 1 9×9 inch Brownie Pan

Ingredients:

For The Cookie Base

  • 3/4 cup Almond Flour
  • 6 tbsp Coconut Flour
  • 2 pinches Pink Himalayan Salt
  • 3/4 tsp Baking Powder
  • 12 tbsp Butter (1 stick and 4 tbsp)
  • 3 oz Unsweetened Baker’s Chocolate (chopped)
  • 3 Eggs (large)
  • 15-20 drops Liquid Stevia
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • 6 tbsp Low Carb Sugar Substitute

For Ice Cream

  • 1 pint Mammoth Creameries Ice Cream (softened, we used Vanilla)

Notes:

If you’re gluten free this Keto Ice Cream recipe is great for you too because it uses a grain free chocolate cookie base. Now you can get all the delicious chocolate flavor without an upset stomach.

# 3: Keto Ice Cream Cake

This delicious low-carb ice cream cake is grain-free, gluten-free, and fits into your Keto diet perfectly as it has only 4.6 net carbs per generous serving and won’t kick you out of Ketosis. Plus the ice cream layer is churn-free, so no ice cream maker needed!

Evolve180 Review:

This recipe author loves to give you options for variations on recipes, which is great!  But for optimal recipe outcome plus solid Keto macros, we recommend sticking with Keto Hershey’s Chocolate Cake for the crumbled layers – with Lakanto as the sweetener. Use Powdered Lakanto as sweetener in the ice cream as well.

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  • Cook Time: 35 minutes
  • Freezing Time: 4 hours
  • Total Time: 4 hrs 50 minutes

Extra crispy, sugar-free Keto ice cream cones that brings back nostalgic memories of our childhood summers. Fully Gluten-Free, Grain-Free, filled with additional Whey Protein and only 1g of Carb, these are the Keto wafers you have been looking for.

Evolve180 Review:

What’s great about these cones is they are not only easy to make, but they also net out to ZERO carbs and only ½ serving of fat each. This means you can use a slightly richer Keto ice cream in them and still stay in the Level 1 or Level 2 recipe zone. Recipe author Zuzana also shows us how to make them without a pizzelle maker which is helpful since not everyone has a wafer iron.

Preparation Time Sheet:

# 5: Keto Ice Cream Mason Jar

Who knew you could make ice cream without an ice cream maker? Yep, all you need is a mason jar, heavy whipping cream, vanilla and a keto sweetener.

The best part is that this homemade ice cream recipe is very easy to customize with your favorite flavors. The vanilla base recipe requires just three main ingredients and then you can get creative with add-ins.

Evolve180 Review:

Recipe author Emily uses powdered Swerve which works nicely in uncooked recipes because it dissolves well and doesn’t turn out gritty. She offers several mouthwatering variations, and even provides a nutritional breakdown for each, which is very helpful.  These are SO CLOSE to Level 1 Macros that we approve them as Level 1 Recipes.

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  • Freezing Time: 4 hours
  • Total Time: 4 hrs 10 minutes

Ingredients:

For Ice Cream Base

Cocoa Coconut (Optional add-ins)

  • 2 tbsp Cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp Unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 2 tbsp Chopped pecans

Chocolate Orange (Optional add-ins)

  • 2 tbsp Chopped sugar-free dark chocolate
  • 1 tbsp Fresh orange zest

Bright Berry (Optional add-ins)

  • 1/4 cup Frozen berries (Smashed into purée with fork)

Instructions:

Get instructions for this recipe by clicking HERE.

Notes:

  • Shake the mason jar for a full 5 minutes! Set a timer if you need to as this step is very important! Shaking the ice cream ensures that the cream doubles in size and results in a creamy ice cream texture. You can opt to instead use a mixer, just be careful not to over mix it as you might end up with butter.
  • Plan for freezing time. You will need about 2 to 4 hours for the ice cream to freeze (it’s worth the wait)!
  • Use a wide-mouth mason jar. It will be easier to scoop out once frozen.
  • Let the ice cream sit on the counter for a few minutes before you scoop it. The ice cream is pretty hard right out of the freezer. We don’t recommend running a glass jar under warm water as this can crack the jar. But if using a plastic mason jar, you should be fine to run it under warm water.

# 6: Keto Ice Cream With Eggs

This low carb ice cream recipe with eggs requires an ice-cream maker. However, if you don’t own one, you can pour the ice cream mixture into a freezer-safe glass container and freeze it, stirring every 30 minutes for 2 hours. This should help in achieving a texture of soft serve like ice cream.

Evolve180 Review:

Hardly anything beats a true custard-based ice cream, so finding a great recipe with eggs is a gift!  While this recipe does require an ice cream maker, author Mira does a great job of explaining how to improvise if you don’t have one. She also uses powdered Swerve, which is one of the only Keto sweeteners that doesn’t turn gritty in ice cream. The only challenge is the blogger doesn’t give a full breakdown of macros, so you’ll have to be careful with variations to stay in the Level 2 zone.

Equipment Needed:

  •  1 ice cream maker

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes
  •  Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • Total Time: 4 hours

Ingredients:

  • 6 Egg yolks
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 cup Almond milk
  • 1/4 cup Powdered Erythritol
  • 1 tbsp Coconut oil
  • 1 tsp MCT oil (Optional)
  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract

Other Ingredients

  • Berries (For topping)
  • Melted chocolate (For topping)
  • 1 tsp Vodka (Optional, to keep the ice cream frozen but soft)

Instructions:

Get instructions for this recipe with eggs by clicking HERE.

Notes:

The sweetener used in this recipe with eggs is powdered SwerveMira used 1/4 cup and the sweetness is fine. But if the ice cream custard does not taste sweet enough to you, you can add up to 2 tsp liquid Stevia.

# 7: No Churn Keto Ice Cream

Expect this no-churn ice cream recipe to be ridiculously creamy! And whichever flavor you go for, it won’t freeze rock solid like your usual homemade ice cream.

Evolve180 Review:

Recipe author Paola from Gnom Gnom gives lots of thoughtful options to make this ice cream perfect for YOU. We recommend using allulose or powdered Lakanto for your sweetener, and if it fits your taste, her suggestion of adding 1 tbsp hard alcohol makes the ice cream even easier to scoop after freezing. Definitely read her tips for best results.

(We’re also excited to try Gnom Gnom’s Keto Marshmallows recipe! If you try them first, come back to let us know what you think. We set this at Level 1 for the base Vanilla recipe. If you add ingredients with additional carbs, bump this to Level 2.)

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes
  •  Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • Freezing Time: 5 hours
  • Total Time: 5 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Paleo and Keto vanilla ice cream

1 Vanilla bean pod (Or more vanilla extract)
13.5 oz Full-fat coconut milk (i.e. 1 13.5-oz can)
135-150 g Xylitol erythritol (to taste)
1/4 tsp Kosher salt
1/4 tsp Xanthan Gum  (Or 3/4 teaspoon arrowroot flour, if Paleo)
480 g Heavy whipping cream (Or chilled coconut cream)
2 tsp Vanilla extract (Up to 4-6 tsps if not using a vanilla pod)
1 tbsp Vodka, brandy or any alcohol of your choice  (Omit if using the larger quantity of vanilla extract)

For Flavor Variants

Oreo Cookie crumbsfor cookies and cream keto marshmallows for rocky road ice cream
50 g Cocoa powder (For Chocolate ice cream)
3 tbsp Espresso powder (For coffee ice cream)
225 g Fresh berries (For Fruity ice cream)
Oreo cookie crumbs (For cookies and cream ice cream)
Keto marshmallows (For Rocky Road ice cream)

Instructions:

Get instructions for this recipe by clicking HERE.

Notes:

You absolutely NEED to use full fat coconut milk here! As lighter versions are simply diluted in water, and they’ll make your ice cream more icy.

Be sure to measure a very lightly packed 1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum, as it’s an ingredient that’s easy to overpack. And if you overdo it, you’ll get gummy ice cream. And if paleo, simply substitute it with 3/4 teaspoon arrowroot flour.

# 8: Keto Ice Cream With Coconut Milk

This Keto ice cream with coconut milk recipe needs just 3 ingredients! No sugar and no dairy are used, but you’d never tell. The texture is smooth, creamy, and melts in your mouth. It’s pleasantly sweet and doesn’t have any actual coconut flavor unless you want it to do so!

Evolve180 Review:

We chose this recipe based on the creative addition of unsweetened almond or cashew butter, which greatly improves texture, mouth feel and richness.  DON’T use agave syrup (which is mentioned as an option) because studies have shown it is not Keto-friendly. Try allulose syrup or powdered Lakanto instead. We think it’ll be hard to stick to ¼ cup servings, but even a double serving still lands this delicious recipe at Level 1.

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  •  Cook Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

1 can 13.5 oz coconut milk (Chilled)
3/4 cup Almond butter or cashew butter
1/4 cup Keto maple syrup (Can use maple syrup or agave nectar)
1/2 tsp Coconut extract (Optional)

Instructions:

Notes:

You can use any nut or seed butter of choice.

Ice cream should be stored in the freezer in its container for up to 2 months.

To serve, remove the ice cream from the freezer 15 minutes before serving, to let it thaw out slightly.

# 9: Keto Ice Cream With Almond Milk

See how easy it is to make sugar-free almond milk ice cream, with simple ingredients and 1.9 g net carbs per serving. While this almond milk ice cream recipe is made with an ice cream maker as written, you could make it without if you really want to. You’d have to stir it every 30 minutes for the first 4-6 hours of freezing, to avoid making it too icy.

Evolve180 Review:

Recipe author Maya Krampf’s almond milk ice cream is amazing! This is a custard-based ice cream so you’ll need to cook it and it will require an ice cream maker to prepare. It’s a good idea to follow her techniques and sweetener recommendations for best results. Almond milk ice cream delivers rich flavor without as much fat as recipes based on heavy cream.

Preparation Time Sheet:

  • Prep Time: 25 minutes
  • Cook Time: 10 minutes
  • Freezing Time: 8 hours
  • Total time: 8 hours 35 minutes

Equipment Needed:

1 Ice Cream maker

Ingredients:

For The Almond Milk Ice Cream

4 Large egg yolks
1/2 cup Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend

1/2 tsp Vanilla extract

Instructions:

Top 5 Commercial Keto Ice Cream Brands

No time to prepare your own ice cream? No problem. There are several Keto ice cream brands out there that rise above the competition and make ice creams that are rich, creamy, and as close to the “real” thing as you can get. Plus, as long as you’re responsible, these brands will not knock you out of your hard-earned state of Ketosis.

All grocery stores do not stock every brand we mention here, so you have to check the frozen section at Walmart, Safeway, Kroger, Costco or wherever you shop to see if they carry some. At a pinch, search for “Keto Ice Cream Near Me” on Google or visit the store locator page on a commercial brand website to find the nearest place that stocks the ice creams of your choice.

# 1: Killer Creamery

All of their ice creams contain C8 MCT oil (said to increase ketone levels), only 2 to 3 net carbs, and low-GI sweeteners instead of sugar. Pretty pricey, but Killer Creamery does make some of the tastiest low carb ice creams and even if you eat a whole container on your own, you’re only eating 9 net carbs.

# 2: Rebel Creamery

One of the first ice cream brands in the Keto market, Rebel Creamery made a splash with their net carb count – per pint, and not a serving! – printed boldly on the front of the container.

Pretty helpful for those of us who are likely to eat a whole pint out of years of a big ice-cream eating habit. Something else to keep in mind for pint-eaters: even though their carb count is low, Rebel’s ice creams are full-bodied and calorie dense with plenty of fat.

# 3: Halo Top

Halo Top uses an ultra-filtered skim milk base in their pops and pints to keep the carb count low (5g-10g net carbs per pint). They also provide one of the biggest amounts of protein per serving (ranging between 6 and 7 grams). You’ll find lots of fun, new flavors to try but not too many of the classic, comfort ones.

# 4: Enlightened Ice Cream

In addition to low-calorie and dairy-free pints, Enlightened Ice Cream now has a Keto line-up with classic flavors like Mint Chocolate Chunk, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Coffee & Cream. Pints contain 1g of net carbs and are sweetened with Erythritol, monk fruit extract and Stevia. With cream as its first ingredient on the label, expect a very smooth and rich treat!

# 5: Keto Pint

With a brand commitment to accelerating the transition to lower-sugar foods and eliminating the single-largest health disruptor – sugar – Keto Pint is enjoying a growing popularity among the socially conscious with locally-sourced dairy ingredients for their pints, pops and chocolate bars.

Some ice cream flavors from Keto Pint have the highest carb counts (they use whole milk) but they also use Erythritol in high amounts to cut back on the net carbs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Homemade Keto Ice Creams

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Safe?

A: Keto ice cream is safe on a Ketogenic diet if you pay close attention to the ingredients used. Keto ice cream is a little bit like nuts on a Keto diet. Nuts are a mixed food with carbs, fat and protein. Any ice cream that says it is “Keto” might have low net carbs but might be so high in fat that it ends up slowing down weight loss or causing weight gain. So as long as you’re careful, this ice cream can be safely used as part of a successful Keto weight loss or maintenance program.

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Healthy?

A: It is only as healthy as the ingredients used to make it. For instance, if you are avoiding saturated fat, you’ll need to search for recipes which utilize nut milks or avocado.  If you are trying to reduce calories, look for recipes based on lower-fat milk bases instead of heavy cream and eggs. If you have a solid plan, a Ketogenic ice cream can be worked in and still be healthy.

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Good For Diabetes?

A: Most elements of a Keto diet are helpful for those with type 2 diabetes. As long as you stick to an overall plan that is calibrated to keep your blood sugar in the right zone, and you make sure the ice cream you choose fits into that, then yes, it can be good for diabetes.

Q: Does Keto Ice Cream Give You Diarrhea?

A: Usually the part of the ice cream that causes digestive problems is the sweetener. If you stick to sweeteners like Erythritol, Monk Fruit, Stevia and Allulose, you should be fine. Sugar alcohols are usually the culprit with digestive issues – with the most problems reported from Maltitol.

Q: Why Is Ice Cream Not Keto?

A:  Regular ice cream is packed with sugar and very high in fat. Even ¼ cup of regular ice cream can be enough to push you out of the fat-burning state of Ketosis.

Q: How Much Keto Ice Cream Can I Eat?

A: As long as the total amount of net carbs and fat for the serving you’re considering fits into your daily targets for your Keto weight loss or maintenance plan, you can eat as much as you’d like.

Q: Can I Eat Keto ice Cream Every Day?

A: Yes!  You can absolutely eat this ice cream every day, as long as it fits into your daily totals for fat, net carbs and protein. If you choose recipes which use the healthiest fats, including nuts, olives and avocados, then ice cream becomes an extra healthy part of your diet.

Q: Does Keto Ice Cream Make You Gain Weight?

A: Any food can make you gain weight if it exceeds the total amount of calories, fat, net carbs and protein your body needs for fuel. Many people think you can eat as much fat and protein as you want on a Keto diet. That isn’t true. Your body will store anyting it can’t utilize immediately as fat. Eating too much fat will also keep your body from burning its own fat. Eating too much protein can knock you out of Ketosis because your body converts part of it to carbohydrates. Learn about true Keto to be sure that the foods you choose will not cause you to gain weight.

Q: Will Keto Ice Cream Kick You Out Of Ketosis?

A: Any food, including this ice cream, can kick you out of Ketosis if your daily total of net carbs or protein exceeds what your body needs.  The amount of carbs someone can tolerate and still stay in Ketosis is very individual. It depends partly on your level of metabolic efficiency, insulin resistance, and overall activity level.  Be sure you understand your own thresholds so that you can stay within them no matter which food you are choosing.

Q: What Does Keto Ice Cream Taste Like?

A: This ice cream tastes different depending on the ingredients used to make it. Ice creams based on coconut milk tend to have a coconut taste. Ice creams based on nut milks tend to have a plant-like flavor. Ice creams using heavy cream and eggs tend to be the most like regular ice cream but depending on the sweetener you use, it can have an aftertaste or a gritty texture. The truth is no ice cream that is Keto tastes exactly like the real thing, but there are many, many great recipes that come very close. That’s why we do our Top Picks – – because we know how hard it can be to find a great recipe and we want to share what we’ve learned.

Q: Why Is Keto Ice Cream Taste Chalky?

A: Many of these ice creams are made with whey protein powder to add bulk and flavor without carbohydrates. Whey protein powder can taste chalky.

Q: Why Is Keto Ice Cream So Hard?

A: These ice creams made from coconut milk or nut milks are hard because they crystallize as they freeze, and they are often not churned – which fills regular ice cream with air and makes it softer. Regular ice cream usually also has additives that keep ice crystals from forming.

Q: How To Make Keto Ice Cream Soft?

A: The best technique I’ve seen to make the ice cream soft is to use a custard base, sweetened with Allulose or an Allulose / monk fruit blend, and to add a very small amount of Xanthan gum.  Another cool trick if you don’t mind the flavor is to add a tablespoon of hard alcohol such as rum or whiskey to your ice cream. It tends to act as an anti-freeze and makes the ice cream a little more soft and scoopable.

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Sugar Free?

A: Most of these ice creams have no “added sugar”. But the ingredients used to make it often have some residual sugar. The key is to make sure that the ice cream has low net carbs, which will also means that it is low in overall sugar.

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Gluten Free?

A: Many brands of ice creams that are Keto are gluten free. Most of the ingredients tend to be dairy, fat, eggs and alternative sweeteners. Some of the sweeteners may contain traces of gluten but not many. Therefore yes, many are gluten free.

Q: Is Keto Ice Cream Dairy Free?

A: There are many dairy-free options made from coconut milk, almond milk, avocado and other nut-based options. However, even ice creams made from heavy cream and whey protein can be safe for people with dairy issues. That’s because the most common problem people have with dairy is a reaction to lactose. Lactose is the sugar in milk. But in most such ice creams, milk has been removed and replaced with cream and whey protein, both of which have been virtually stripped of lactose.

Q: Are Keto ice Cream Bars Healthy?

A: Yes!  Keto bars can be one of the healthiest options because their portion sizes are usually set and smaller than one would eat if they were scooping ice cream into a bowl. These bars can be a great choice for a treat on a Keto plan.

Q: What Stores Sell Keto Ice Cream?

A: Almost all grocery stores sell Halo Top. But it’s harder to find some of the newer Keto brands. If you search, you can often find those at high-end grocery stores like Metropolitan Market or Whole Foods. Most specialty brands like Mammoth CreameryKeto PintRebel and Killer Creamery can be purchased on Amazon and delivered to your door in special packaging that keeps it frozen and ready to eat.
