Carbondale, CO Author Publishes Memoir

By: PR Leap
(PRLeap.com) "Aspen Odyssey: A Long Strange Trip…", a new book by Spencer F. Schiffer, has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

In the early 1970s, as the country grappled with political upheaval and cultural unrest, newly minted attorney Spencer F. Schiffer and his wife left New York in search of a simpler life. Their journey led them to Aspen, Colorado, a sleepy mountain town on the cusp of becoming an international playground for the wealthy and powerful.

What began as a winter of ski-bumming quickly evolved into a front-row seat to the forces that would reshape Aspen's identity. In his new memoir, Schiffer traces the unlikely chain of events that followed, from representing a wild mix of clients, including drug smugglers and Donald Trump, to witnessing the downfall of Aspen's largest landowner, Hans Cantrup, in 1983.

That bankruptcy set off a domino effect that would draw in an eclectic cast of characters: Donald Trump, poised to buy a key parcel of land for a luxury hotel; and Mohamed Hadid, a mysterious D.C. developer who appeared at the last moment with a $42 million wire transfer, funds that would later be tied to the SAAR Foundation, a group investigated for money laundering and links to terrorist organizations.

The tale winds through arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, the Iran-Contra affair, and ultimately, the Saudi royal family, who emerged as the town's largest landholders. Along the way, Schiffer explores Aspen's darker side, including the still-unsolved car bomb murder of local cocaine smuggler Steven Grabow in 1986.

Filled with twists of fate, powerful personalities, and behind-the-scenes intrigue, Schiffer's story is a riveting exploration of how a former mining town became an epicenter of wealth, scandal, and transformation.
